What is Kente cloth?
One morning, two Akan friends named Kwaku and Ota went hunting in a nearby Asanteman forest and found a spider spinning its web. After two full days of watching the spider, the friends went home and implemented what they had seen. This was the beginning of the kente cloth.

The silk and cotton threads of Kente cloth intertwines itself over centuries of royalty. This sacred cloth was worn in times of extreme importance and was first worn by Nobel members of the Akan group of South Ghana. It was strictly used for events of great importance such as a child's rite of passage or a marriage.
Varieties of silk or cotton yarn are uniquely joined to reflect the significance of each color and pattern.
Black • Things get darker as they mature. The Akans blacken most of their spiritual objects to increase their spiritual strength. Black symbolizes spiritual maturity and antiquity.
Blue • The blue sky is an abode the Supreme Creator. It symbolizes good fortune, peacefulness, harmony, and love related ideas.
Yellow • In some spiritual rituals, mashed yarn is made yellow with oil palm and served with eggs. It symbolizes royalty, wealth, vitality and spirituality.
Pink • Viewed as a mile and gentle red, it is associated with tenderness, calmness, and sweetness. The Akan believe these are essential attributes of the female essence.
Red • Red-eyed mood means a sense of seriousness and readiness for a serious spiritual or political encounter. Red symbolizes sacrifice, struggle, and a spiritual or political mood.
Green • associated with vegetation and harvesting, and herbal medicine. Green leaves are usually used to sprinkle water during purification rituals. It symbolizes growth, abundant health, and spiritual rejuvenation.
Maroon • Associated with the color of Mother-Earth. The color red-brown is usually obtained from clay and is associated with healing and the power to repel evil spirits.
Gray • Ash is used to re-create spiritual balance and to protect against evil spirits. Gray represents spiritual cleansing.
Silver • Associated with the moon that represents the female essence. Silver ornaments are usually worn by women during spiritual purification, naming ceremonies, and marriage. The color symbolizes joy, purity, and serenity.
